What drives your choices!?
A game about motives, choices and consequences.
Play your motive. Make your choice.
Face the consequences.
Garage2020 asked me to design a concept for an analogue game aimed at helping young people become more aware of the consequences of their choices. This idea was sparked by a question from Sterk Huis, after they encountered many young women who had become trapped in relationships with so-called lover boys.
The result is Je Kiest, Maar Wat!? A game about motives, choices and consequenses. Players take on a character, each shaped by different underlying motives people have when making choices.
Together with the development team at Garage2020, we evolved the idea into a board game. We tested it extensively in schools, where we gathered real-life dilemmas that are featured in the game.
The game is designed with and for young people aged 12 to 17 years old and takes a humorous, engaging approach to discussing topics like
decision-making, personal motives, and consequences.
In addition, we created instructions for teachers to guide classroom conversations with questions like;
– How can you make a plan now, for when you get into trouble?
– What might hold you back from asking for help?
– Is there someone you can always go to for help? Who is that person?
– What should you do if you realize a friend is in trouble?

The game invites players to empathize with characters whose motives may be completely different from their own - something they experience as fun, while also (as a bonus) helping build their empathy skills.
